ELEGANT PARROT

The Elegant Parrot is primarily found in the southern regions of Australia, including parts of South Australia and Western Australia. These birds favour open woodlands, grasslands, and areas with scattered trees and shrubs. They are often seen in pairs or small flocks, flitting gracefully through the undergrowth or perched on low branches.

True to its name, the Elegant Parrot is a striking bird. Adults boast a beautiful combination of bright green plumage with a touch of blue on the wings and a yellow belly. Males are typically more vibrant than females, with a distinctive blue band across the forehead. Their slender build and long tail feathers add to their graceful appearance.

Elegant Parrots are highly social and often seen in small flocks, especially outside the breeding season. Their social nature helps them avoid predators and find food more efficiently.

These parrots are known for their soft, melodious calls. They use a variety of sounds to communicate with each other, especially during the breeding season.

Breeding season for the Elegant Parrot usually occurs from August to December. These birds are cavity nesters, often choosing tree hollows, but they may also nest in old fence posts.  The female lays about 4 to 6 eggs, which she incubates for around 18-20 days. During this period, the male diligently brings food to his mate. Once the chicks hatch, both parents share the responsibility of feeding and caring for them until they are ready to fledge, which takes about 4-5 weeks.

Elegant Parrots have a varied diet that primarily consists of seeds from grasses and herbs. They are also known to eat fruits, berries, and occasionally insects. Their feeding habits play a crucial role in seed dispersal and maintaining the health of their ecosystem.

In the wild, Elegant Parrots can live up to 10 years, although their lifespan can be affected by factors such as predation and habitat loss.
