BASIC RESCUE INFORMATION FOR INJURED OR ORPHANED WILDLIFE

Rescuing an injured or orphaned  animal  can be a rewarding experience, but it’s important to approach the situation with care and understanding.

Please refrain from attempting to handle Snakes, Bats, adult Koalas, or adult Kangaroos and Wallabies, as they have the potential to cause serious injury. WIRES Rescue Office can be contacted 24/7 for wildlife information and rescue advice at 1300 094 737

When transporting an injured or distressed animal, place the container securely inside your car, NEVER in the boot to prevent exposure to harmful exhaust fumes. Ensure the lid is tightly closed to prevent any escape.

If immediate help is unavailable, keep the animal in a warm, dark, and quiet environment to minimise stress. Being in an unfamiliar setting with strange noises and smells can be extremely distressing for native wildlife. Stress can be fatal to these animals, so maintaining a calm environment is crucial.

Avoid offering any food or water. Native animals have specialised dietary needs, and providing food or water, especially to an animal in shock, can be harmful or even fatal.
