WHITE-WINGED CHOUGH

Corcorax melanorhamphos

The White-winged Chough, a bird emblematic of eastern and south-eastern Australia, presents a striking figure with its sleek black plumage. These medium-sized birds are easily identified by the vivid white patches on their wings, which contrast sharply against their dark feathers and lend them their name. Their eyes are a piercing red, and they sport a robust, gently curved bill. The black of their plumage extends even to their legs, completing their distinctive appearance.

These birds grace a diverse array of landscapes with their presence, ranging from the woodlands to open forests, and from the heathlands to the dense scrublands. They exhibit a preference for environments rich in dense vegetation and shrubbery, which offer them ample cover and suitable nesting sites.

White-winged Choughs are renowned for their intricate social structures, which mirror the communal intricacies observed in Apostlebirds. They reside in cohesive family groups that include a breeding pair and several non-breeding helpers, which often comprise their grown offspring. This cooperative breeding system plays a pivotal role in the nurturing and safeguarding of their young.

In terms of diet, White-winged Choughs are omnivorous and display a varied palate. Their foraging habits lead them to consume an array of foodstuffs, ranging from insects to seeds, and from fruits to small vertebrates. They may even partake in carrion on occasion. Foraging predominantly on the ground, they employ their formidable bills to unearth and seek out nourishment.

Their nests are architectural marvels, large and conspicuous, deftly constructed within the forks of trees, sometimes reaching heights of up to 10 meters. These nests are woven from grasses, ingeniously bound together with mud or, in some instances, manure, showcasing their adaptability and resourcefulness.

The vocal repertoire of the White-winged Chough is as varied as it is expressive, consisting of melodious whistles that can be as enchanting as they are functional, alongside a series of harsh, chattering sounds. These calls serve as the glue of their social fabric, facilitating communication within the tight-knit groups that define their cooperative existence.
